How to Win an Election is an ancient Roman guide for campaigning that is as up-to-date as tomorrow’s headlines. In 64 BC when idealist Marcus Cicero, Rome’s greatest orator, ran for consul (the highest office in the Republic), his practical brother Quintus decided he needed some no-nonsense advice on running a successful campaign. What follows in his short letter are timeless bits of

Quintus Cicero was born in 100 BCE, and thus was likely the same age as Julius Caesar, for whom he served as a legate during the Gallic Wars. Before that, he ascended the cursus honorum, becoming aedile in 66, praetor in 62, and propraetor of Asia Minor from 61-59. Quintus Cicero also liked old-fashioned and harsh punishments, like putting a person convicted of patricide into a sack and throwing him out in the sea (the felon was severely scourged then sewn into a stout leather bag with a dog, a snake, a rooster, and a monkey, and the bag was thrown into a river).[8] 2012-08-08 Quintus Cicero wrote this letter to his brother, the great Roman orator Marcus Cicero, advising him on his campaign as a candidate for the consulship of Rome. Marcus, who didn't come from a noble family was an unlikely candidate for the highest office in the Roman empire and needed all the advice he could get. Cicero goes on to praise the Metelli as a group for being exemplary citizens. In Juvenal's eighth satire, he speaks about virtue alone making one truly noble, rather than an inherited name. He uses a few cognomens to illustrate his point, including that of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus. Letters to Quintus 1 (I.1) Rome, end of 60 or beginning of 59 From Marcus to his brother Quintus greetings. I don’t doubt that this letter will be outpaced by many messengers, indeed by Rumour herself with her well known speed, and that you will hear from others beforehand that our loss and your labour 1 have been extended for a third year. Still, I thought it proper that this tiresome news
( c. 102–43bc), younger brother of Cicero and similarly educated (they were both in Athens in 79 bc), had none of his brother's genius. He was irascible and often tactlessly outspoken; yet he was a good soldier and an able administrator.
The boy’s mother, Pomponia, was the sister of Cicero’s dear friend, Atticus. The year 45 B.C. was not an easy one for the nineteen-year-old Quintus. From mid-65 to mid-64 b.c. Marcus Tullius Cicero was campaigning for election to a consulship of 63. Of his six competitors two were formidable. Both were “nobles” (i.e., of consular ancestry). Quintus, Cicero’s brother, would become a Roman statesman and military leader.

Quintus Cicero was a man of considerable ability; and, although he never reached the consulship, he was aedile in 65 and praetor in 62 B.C. At first he was inclined to attach himself to Pompey, and in 57 B.C. served as the latter's legatus in Sardinia, 1 but three years later he joined Caesar in Gaul and took part in the invasion of Britain.
